Tuesday’s Thoughts
While wondering what it would be like to win the Mega Millions, here is what's on my mind this morning:
* The Maple Leafs roll into the First Niagara Center tonight to take on the Buffalo Sabres in the back end of a home and home. The Leafs won Saturday night at the ACC 4-3 and as a result dealt a blow to the Sabres playoff chances. This will be the Sabres last home game of the regular season, with their remaining two games at Philadelphia and at Boston. This is a must win for Buffalo. It might be a long night for the Leafs.
* Joe Colborne has been called up from the Marlies to fill in for the injured Mikhail Grabovski. I'm lookiing forward to seeing the kid play as he could be a big piece to the puzzle next season.
* Leaf fans should check out the following article about the team's farm system and re-think all of the venom directed at Brian Burke. http://www.torontosun.com/2012/04/02/leafs-hoping-help-is-on-the-way
* What was no surprise to me, the Kentucky Wildcats defeated the Kansas Jayhawks to become NCAA Basketball National Champions. Too bad it started so late to watch.
* Sean Payton is suppose to meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to appeal his year long suspension for BountyGate. Many believe that Payton really wants to clearly understand what his restrictions are under the suspension. It is extremely unlikely that there will be any kind of appeal. My question to Goodell is this: are there any other teams that have had a bounty system??
* If the Cleveland Browns take Ryan Tannehill with the fourth overall pick of the draft, Tom Heckert and Mike Holmgren should be run out of town.
* With the injury to Michael Pineda, the New York Yankees starting rotation is set for the start of the season until Andy Pettitte is ready which will be sometime in May. I like the fact that Pettitte is getting ready as it will provide some insurance if Ivan Nova or Phil Hughes hits a speed bump.
* I am really looking forward to the Flyers-Penguins series. Sunday's brawl was old-time hockey and I loved it. Peter Laviolette trying to get at Dan Bylsma reminded me of the time when Pat Burns tried to get at Barry Melrose during the Western Conference Finals during the 1992-93 Playoffs.
* Thoroughly enjoyed an interview that Brian Hayes of TSN Radio Toronto had with Flyer forward Scott Hartnell. I remember when Hartnell was heading into free agency a few years ago when Bill Watters was advocating for the Leafs to get him. They never had a chance when Nashville moved the big guy to Philly.
* The gasbags at WGR 550 are at it again as they are blaming the Sabres lost weekend on goaltender Ryan Miller. If it wasn't for Miller, the Sabres wouldn't be in the hunt right now. He has been honored by the NHL as one of the three stars for the month of March. I suppose it was Miller's fault that Sekera misplayed the puck at the blue line while on the power play that led to the Leafs shorthanded goal. I suppose it was Miller's fault that the Sabres defense allowed the Leafs to crash the net before the end of the second period that resulted in the Leafs second goal. The anti-Miller sentiment on GR550 is incredible. What really needs to happen is that Miller walks out when his contract is up. Better yet, why can't the gasbags rally up all the Louies and Chesters and get Miller traded. How about the Leafs number one pick and Nazem Kadri for Miller??? What do you say Jeremy??? It would be two number ones for Miller. If I were Brian Burke, I would do it in a second.
* And finally, I'll have my MLB Baseball predictions for the 2012 season prior to the Yankees season opener which is Friday.
Tuesday’s Thoughts
While wondering how long it will be before Bobby Valentine's act wears thin in Boston, here is what's on my mind this morning:
* What in the world is up with the New York Jets?? Acquiring Tim Tebow makes absolutely no football sense. Seems more like an attempt to take publicity away from the Super Bowl Champion NY Giants. Ultimately, Rex Ryan will regret the day that Tebow arrived in New York.
* Rumors abound that Sean Payton would like his former mentor, Bill Parcells, to take over the New Orleans Saints while Payton serves his one year suspension. Somehow, I don't see why the 71 year old Parcells would want to do this.
* The National Football League has a problem on its hands and that problem is Warren Sapp. Sapp's declaration on the league's television network that Jeremy Shockey was the guy who blew the whistle on Bountygate has the league in some potential hot water. Besides the fact that everyone around the investigation and Commissioner Goodell has indicated that Sapp is wrong, if Shockey does not find employment this season the league will be facing a lawsuit for sure. This country has whistleblower laws which prohibits retaliation against an employee who speaks out about an improper practice. Sapp should be taken to task for his remarks and the league needs to monitor what is said on its own network.
* The NFL Draft is a month away and there is all kinds of speculation about what the Cleveland Browns are going to do with the fourth overall pick. There is a possibility that they might trade down to acquire more picks. Bottom line for me: they better do something to bring some spark to their boring offense.
* The fascination of the New York media over the lack of velocity on Michael Pineda's fastball is amazing. This 21 year old kid seems to have developed the third pitch that the Yankees wanted him to work on and his spring stats are good. On the other end of the spectrum is Ivan Nova whose spring numbers have not been very good. Maybe the dailies ought to quit looking at the radar gun and pay more attention to earned runs given up, hits allowed and walks.
* Is there anything more boring than watching a baseball exhibition game from the sixth inning on??
* Nice to see Tiger Woods win a PGA tournament over the weekend. Woods being on his game will truly make this year's Masters more interesting to watch. A last day battle between Woods and Rory McElroy would really bring excitement back to golf the likes of which we haven't seen since Tiger bursted on to the scene many years ago.
* As predicted by many (me included), 3 number one seeds did not make it to the Final Four. Kentucky will be the only one playing next weekend and I believe they are the favorite to win it all. The best match up in the Finals would be Kentucky and Ohio State. By the way, what has happened to the ACC???
* Should be a dandy this evening as the Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabres meet in the nation's capitol. The teams are tied for the 8th and final playoff spot. What makes this game really interesting is that Buffalo's hottest player is Ryan Miller and Washignton's hottest player is Alex Ovechkin.
* The Maple Leafs meet the Carolina Hurricanes at the ACC tonight. The Hurricanes have really been playing well as of late. The loser of this game will be in 13th place in the Eastern Conference and have a shot at a lottery pick. The way things have been going I can feel a Carolina win.
* A bright spot for Leaf Nation: what team has given up the fewest goals in the American Hockey League?? You guessed it, the Toronto Marlies.
* The guy who I think is the most underrated coach in the NHL is Barry Trotz. The Nashville Predators are not a big market team but they make the playoffs on a regular basis. They don't have any big name goal scorers but they compete every game. Might do the Maple Leafs some good to watch some Predator games.
* Sad news on Sunday when it was announced that Bert Sugar passed away at the age of 74. Sugar was Mr. Boxing as he covered the game for years and was a frequent guest on many sports talk shows throughout North America. I always enjoyed listening to him. He was a throwback sports reporter. He will be sadly missed.
* And finally, while driving home last night, I had to hear Mike Schopp tell a story about being at some event over the weekend and he couldn't remember the name of a former school mate. What made it worst was he called the guy his wrong name the whole evening. It was only until the end of the event when Schopp got the bad news. This is the state of Sports Radio in Western New York.
Tuesday’s Thoughts
While wondering why it seems every year I end up with one of my fantasy teams having Aramis Ramirez on its roster, here is what's on my mind this morning:
* Well the Peyton Manning sweepstakes is over as he is reportedly going to sign with the Denver Broncos. This certainly will change the dynamics of the AFC West. The Broncos not only will be a legitimate contender in the division but with Manning they also become a threat in the AFC. Look to see more Bronco games on national TV.
* When you look at the division, pressure will be squarely on the underachieving San Diego Chargers. Phillip Rivers and Company have not produced and with Manning in the division they best be ready to play come September instead of waiting until mid-November.
* Manning is the best quarterback John Fox has ever coached and it will be interesting to see how he handles the future Hall of Famer. The biggest casualties in all of this are Tim Tebow and the Miami Dolphins. The once-proud Miami franchise is having a difficult time attracting free agents. They struck out on Manning and also struck out on Matt Flynn. Missing out on Flynn is stunning since Dolphin Head Caoch Joe Philbin was Flynn's offensive coordinator in Green Bay. Does this mean that Tim Tebow goes to the Dolphins?? No, David Garrard signed with Miami. Rumblings are Tebow could end up in Jacksonville. But one report had the Jaguars not necessarily enamored with the former Gator. Two possibilities: New Orleans and New England.
* While teams like Chicago, Denver, Buffalo, Washington and others improve themselves through free agency, there sit the Cleveland Browns who let go more players than they signed. Boy, I can't wait for another season of Browns Football.
* Andy Pettite's return to the Yankees still has me shocked. The big lefty was surely missed last season and somehow I don't see the Yanks losing Game 5 at home with Pettite on the mound. If he can pitch like he did in 2010, the Yankee rotation will be pretty solid. The best thing about Pettite is that he knows how to win.
* One guy who might take lessons from Pettite is Ivan Nova. Sunday night Nova was less than stellar the first two innings of his four inning outing. His calling out of the young catcher, Gustavo Molina, was classless from a young man who has not earned his stripes in the big leagues as a pitcher. In my mind, he is the odd man out of the rotation to start the season.
* I have taken Brian Cashman to task many times but he deserves credit for what he has done in this off season. Not only has he upgraded the starting rotation, he has also provided a strong bench for Joe "The Binder" Girardi. This may be the best bench that the Yankees have had to start the season in a long, long time.
* As a Maple Leafs fan there is not much to say other than totally embarassed over last night's 8-0 whipping at the hands of the Boston Bruins. The Leafs have been terrible all year against the Bruins, being outscored 36-10. Not only did they get beat all year on the scoreboard but they also got beat physically.
* I am really tired of the constant drumbeat on the part of certain Toronto media types and Leaf fans for Brian Burke's removal as President and General Manager. The article below from Dobber Hockey says it all as far as I'm concerned. All I can say to the critics is: be careful what you wish for.
http://www.dobberhockey.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4495:state-of-the-toronto-maple-leafs&catid=3:dobber&Itemid=96
* If Sunday's game between the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins is a prelude to an opening round playoff series between these two teams, we are in for a memorable one. These two teams generally hate each other. Both of these 2 teams are legitimate Cup contenders and the Battle of Pennsylvannia is going to be fun to watch.
* Finally, can anyone remember when the New York Mets were relevant???
Tuesday’s Thoughts
While thinking about fifteen years ago last Friday when Biggie Smalls was gunned down, here's what is on my mind this morning:
* The Maple Leafs are in Florida to take on the Southeast leading Panthers. I would imagine that Jonas Gustavsson will be back in the net once again for the Leafs. It's amazing how improved defensive zone coverage helps a goalie gain his confidence.
* Will the Leafs score a goal tonight and what period will it be in?
* Here's three stats that need to be improved upon next year by the Leafs: 1.) The Leafs are 8-12 on Saturday nights and half of those wins came in October. 4-1 in October, 1-2 November, 0-3 December, 1-2 January, 1-3 February and 1-1 in March. 2.) The Leafs are 16-13-6 at home. Randy Carlyle has said that his team needs to make the ACC a tough place to play. In contrast, Washington is 23-10-3 and Winnipeg is 21-10-4. 3.) The Leafs are 7-12-0 within the division and 0-5 against Boston. This is the worst record in the Northeast Division.
* Three players I hope are not on the Leafs roster next year are: Colby Armstrong, Matthew Lombardi and Tim Connolly. The first two could happen. I don't see anyone willing to take Connolly.
* During the Leaf-Flyers game on Saturday, Damien Cox tweeted that he wouldn't be surprised if Jaroslav Halak was in a Leaf uniform. Hmmmmmm....I wonder what it would take to get him???
* Phil Hughes and CC Sabathia looked good on Sunday afternoon and Hiroki Kuroda pitched well last night (even though he wasn't satisfied with his own performance). While it's still early, the guy I'm worried about is Ivan Nova. I like the kid but he has not looked good so far, particularly his last outing. He starts tonight against Boston.
* What's up with David Robertson??? How much money do you make and your moving boxes?? Really??? Fortunately for the Yanks the injury was not that serious.
* Bernie Williams will be at Yankee camp today and it made me think: when are the Yankees going to honor their center fielder from the late 90's glory years?? While plenty of attention has been given to the Core Four (now the Core Two), Williams has been the forgotten man. He too came up from the Yankee farm system and was a key contributor to the Yankees success.
* It is going to be real interesting where Peyton Manning ultimately lands for the 2012 NFL season. I thought that Miami had the inside track but it appears that Denver may be the team. In that division, the Broncos could win with Manning and the stable of receivers that they have along with Willis MaGahee. Their defense is pretty good too. However, its definitely not a warm weather location. Arizona might be a good fit also. Clearly the NFC West is very winnable and the Cardinals do have Larry Fitzgerald. However the word was that Manning wanted to stay in the AFC. This will be the most watched process in NFL free agency history.
* Yesterday afternoon Schopp & The Bulldog were all pissed off because the Bills came out and said they were not in the Manning sweepstakes. The two WGR windbags felt that the Bills owed their fans to at least invite Manning for an interview. Oh ok I get it so then when Manning says no thank you these two morons can either bad mouth the Bills for not getting him or bad mouth Manning. This is the problem with the Buffalo sports media: they raise expectations and get all of the Chester Cheektowagas & Louie Lackawannas fired up and then when the bottom falls out the GR loudmouths are all pissed off because people are calling in screaming bloody murder.
* By the way, I also had to hear about Schopp's ride back home from his vacation. Pleeeassee!!!!!!!!!!
* The report on the New Orleans Saints bounty system has rocked the NFL. It was pretty funny last week watching Mike Golic trying to defend the Saints. What's even more funny is that the whole issue of bounties being placed on quarterbacks and star players goes back many years. The Buffalo Bills back in the late 60's had a bounty on Joe Namath when the Jets came to the Old Rockpile. The Oakland Raiders were also in on the act when it came to Namath. For media people around the NFL to feign disbelief over the whole situation is hypocritical since they had to know what was going on. Kind of like baseball media not knowing that steroids was going on in the late 90's.
* More importantly than the media knowing what was going on with bounties, I find it hard to believe that the NFL didn't know about it either. Kind of like Major League Baseball with steroids.
* Somehow I'm having a hard time seeing Randy Moss playing for Jim Harbaugh. Good luck to Alex Smith too. So they replace Braylon Edwards with Moss. Hmmmmmmm.
* If the Browns do not make a free agent signing to strengthen their offensive line and linebacking corp I'm going to go absolutely wild!!!
* Glad to hear that long-time Browns beat writer Tony Grossi will be hooking up with ESPN Radio WKNR 850 in Cleveland and will be covering the team once again. The Cleveland Plain Dealer booted Grossi off the Browns beat because of a tweet that Grossi made which called Randy Lerner a jerk. Grossi apologized but it is obvious that the team went to the newspaper and voiced its concern. Grossi is knowledgeable and is critical but fair as it relates to the Browns. It will be interesting to see if Sportstime Ohio brings Grossi back on its Browns related shows during the season.
* March Madness begins and what's up with a 12th seed and 14th seed play-in game???
* How Drexel didn't make the Big Dance is a classic example of the bias against mid-major schools. The Dragons were 27-5 and they have been left out. If they were 31-1 and lost their conference tourney would they still be out???
* There isn't one number one seed in the tournament that is a lock to be in the Final Four.
* The revelation that Syracuse University's basketball team violated its own drug policy further damages Jim Boeheim's reputation. It will be awfully hard for him to claim he knew nothing about it like he did with the whole Bernie Fine mess.
* I was remiss in not acknowledging the passing of Gary Carter. What I found truly amazing was the impact that Carter had in Canada, particularly in Montreal. The fact that the Montreal Canadiens honored Carter at one of its games shows how much he was thought of in La Belle Province.
* And finally, congratulations to St. Bonaventure for winning the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament. The Bonnies are the number 14 seed in the East Region and will meet a tough Florida State team. I wonder what wizard Brad Ritter has to say about that. It was Ritter back in 2005 who dismissed Niagara's winning of the MAAC Tournament as not a big deal because they were going to be knocked out of the NCAA Tournament in their first game. Nothing like promoting the local schools.
Tuesday’s Thoughts (Saturday Edition)
While wondering if I will hear "Fire Wilson" chants tonight at the ACC, here's what is on my mind this morning:
* Toronto media is in overdrive condemning Brian Burke and Ron Wilson. Burke is getting it for not having a veteran goalie and not going after Jeff Carter. It's a fair criticism as it relates to the goaltending situation. They could have kept J.S. Giguere. With respect to Carter, he has a terrible contract and he is not a playmaking big center that the Leafs need. In fact many GM's believe that Columbus made out in the deal. With respect to Wilson, if the Leafs don't make the playoffs then he should be fired.
* Rumor has it that Matt Frattin will be called up to the Leafs and Colby Armstrong will be in the lineup. Jay Rosehill and Darryl Boyce have been placed on waivers and it is my understanding that Boyce was claimed by Columbus while Rosehill is back with the Marlies.
* The Leafs problems stem from the fact that they are not smart defensively and they need some muscle. The first part I lay blame on Wilson. His run and gun philosophy is killing them right now and if they make the playoffs it will get them nowhere. With respect to muscle, Brian Burke needs to address this in a hurry.
* Unlike many others I am happy that Ryan Braun has won his appeal. Major League Baseball screwed up and the fact that Braun's name was leaked when the test results are supposed to be confidential once again calls into question the whole process. This is not the first time a name has been leaked. People can say what they want but as far as I'm concerned Ryan Braun is clean.
* I'm glad to hear that Mark Teixiera finally realizes that he needs to consider going the other way when he bats left handed. He's even talking about bunting. Let's hope that Tex can get that average back up in the 290's.
* In a couple of weeks the NCAA Basketball Conference Tournaments will begin and it truly is an exciting time of the year. The TV coverage last year was fantastic and I'm really looking forward to it.
* And finally, I will be out of the area for the next week and my next post will be Sunday March 4th. I will be on twitter following the trade deadline on Monday.
Tuesday’s Thoughts
While wondering what life will be as a Yankee fan without Mariano Rivera, here is what's on my mind this morning:
* Mariano Rivera had the Pinstripe World in an uproar yesterday when he reported to camp and told the media that he has made up his mind as far as when he will be retiring. The Greatest Closer Ever told the media that he will tell them his decision at some point. Most Yankee observers believe that this will be Rivera's last year. Boy oh boy I can't imagine who will attempt to take over the closer's role for the Yankees but as fans we need to really enjoy his performance this year.
http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/yankees/possible_exit_sandman_makes_it_season_RqEU8SAcPdSVUAe0fT7YGK
* The Yankees have signed Raul Ibanez to be their lefty DH and play occasionally in the outfield. Now it remains to be seen whether they sign Eric Chavez.
* Brian Cashman admitted on The Mike Francesa Show that the six man rotation probably disrupted CC Sabathia more than Sabathia's weight gain in the second half of the season. I felt that this was a problem last year when Joe "The Binder" Girardi went to the six man. Athletes and particularly major league pitchers like repitition. A classic example is Mike Mussina. Let's hope The Binder learns from his mistake. However, Sabathia does need to keep his weight under control.
* Read an interesting article in the Boston Herald about Jon Lester and Josh Beckett. Lester was very gracious and apologetic in speaking about what happened in Spetember last season. He held himself responsible and understood why fans are upset and apologized. On the other hand, Beckett was as defiant as his idol, Roger Clemens. He was not apologizing for anything and was passing blame on unidentified Red Sox personnel. What a great role model for younger players!!!! Must be something about being from Texas that means you can't admit you were wrong and have to maintain that macho image. What B.S.!!!!!!!!!
* The Oakland A's announced yesterday that they signed Manny Ramirez to a contract worth $500,000. Ramirez would miss the first 50 games due to a suspension as a result of his usage of PED's. So this must be Money Ball circa 2012: sign Bartolo "Little Andre" Colon and Ramirez. Billy Beane is a joke and the fans of this once proud franchise should be sick about it.
* There was a rumor emanating from the Cleveland Fox-affiliate that the Cleveland Browns had worked out a contract to retain running back Peyton Hillis. I tried to see if there was any confirmation of this rumor and there was none to be found. If this indeed happens, the Browns will have made a wise decision.
* There are plenty of rumors about where Peyton Manning is going to end up. The latest has Seattle extremely interested. Something to keep an eye on is that the team that gets Manning (if he leaves the Colts) may also be able to get Reggie Wayne. The 32 year old wide receiver is a free agent and would be a great addition for any team that gets Manning.
* Tonight the Maple Leafs begin a critical four game home stand as the New Jersey Devils come to the ACC. The Devils are 8-1-1 in their last 10 games while the Leafs have lost five out of their last six. The Leafs need to do something that they haven't done on home ice in a long time: score the first goal. As we know the Devils love to clamp things down once they get a lead and they also have the resurgent Marty Brodeur. The Leafs received some help last night as Carolina whipped the Washington Capitals 5-0 leaving the Caps tied with Toronto for the 8th and final playoff spot.
* All of Toronto was a flutter yesterday when it was reported that Brian Burke met in NYC with Columbus GM Scott Howsam. Burke has downplayed the meeting and quite frankly I don't see the Leafs getting Rick Nash. The asking price is way too high. As Leaf fans we want them to make the playoffs but they shouldn't mortgage their future to do it. If they can get a big forward such as a Ryan Malone type or a lock down defenseman such as Ryan Suter they may be much better off than getting Nash or Jeff Carter. One thing to keep in mind, the Leafs would be better off trying to acquire Zach Parise on July 1 as opposed to trading away a Jake Gardiner to get Rick Nash. The overall goal should not be just to make the playoffs but to be a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. For the first time in a number of years the farm system is stocked with talent and to trade it away to make the playoffs this year only to get knocked out in the first round makes no sense.
* And finally, I watched a good chunk of the Knicks-Nets game last night. Deron Williams was on fire for the Nets last night as the Knicks had no answer for him. As I have stated before, it wouldn't take much for me to get back into the Knicks again but I just have to wonder if the Knicks would be better off without Carmelo Anthony.
Tuesday’s Thoughts
While wondering if there is any correlation with the fact that the Yankees have done nothing at the last two MLB trade deadlines and Brian Cashman's dalliances with some psycho twit, here is what's on my mind this morning:
* The fate of the Toronto Maple Leafs' attempt to make the playoffs for the first time since the lockout may become crystal clear at the end of their upcoming 3 game Western Canada road trip that begins tonight in Calagry. The Leafs margin for error is becoming smaller and smaller as they ended a terrible week losing three in a row, including an embarassing 5-0 defeat at the hands of the Montreal Canadiens. It will be interesting to see who Ron Wilson starts in goal tonight and whether or not Colby Armstrong remains out of the lineup and if Mike Kommisarek comes back into the lineup.
* Speculation about Kommisarek's return may be a moot point since Carl Gunnarsson was injured as a result of a collision with Jay Rosehill. Reports would lead one to believe that Gunnarsson will not play tonight as he is having an MRI done today. The news doesn't sound good and if Gunnarsson is out for an extended period of time the Leafs will have lost one of their steadier defenseman.
* While watching some NHL games on Sunday, what hit me was how teams like the Rangers, Flyers and Red Wings drove the net to score goals something the Leafs have failed to do this past week. When your slumping you need to score gritty goals particularly when playing teams that like to play the trap.
* Mats Sundin is probably the most underappreciated Leaf star in the team's recent history. I'm a firm believer that a lot of that had to do with the fact that Sundin was not Canadian. It's the same reason that some in the Center of the Hockey Universe have such disdain for Brian Burke. The fact is that Sundin was a world class player who unfortunately never had linemates who could match his skills. Could you imagine if Sundin was able to play with Phil Kessel and Joffrey Lupul?? On Saturday night, Sundin once again showed the class and dignity that he displayed as the Leaf Captain during his banner raising ceremony. Too bad his former team couldn't bring home a win.
* http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/yankees/ageless_jeter_first_preps_camp_again_PQyMd5ngsVn8vOYCeH8DmM
Read this article in Sunday's NY Post and I guess it confirms why Derek Jeter is my favorite Yankee. The Yankee Captain is a great role model for the young Yankee prospects. It will be a sad day when he hangs up his spikes and I'm not sure if we will see another one like him.
* It appears that the Yankees are working a deal to move AJ Burnett to the Pittsburgh Pirates. If the Yanks pull this off it would be the best thing that could happen. The feeling among many is that a deal will get done but it comes down to how much the Pirates will pay and what prospects the Yankees will get.
* The Jeremy Lin story out of New York is a fascinating one and could possibly save the Knicks season. There is plenty of speculation as to how Carmelo Anthony will fit in with the captivating Lin. Melo is back in the lineup tonight against the Toronto Raptors at the ACC and all eyes will be watching unless you have Time Warner Cable.
* Yesterday Paul "Gasbag" Hamilton was asked if the Buffalo Sabres were better than Ottawa and Toronto. Gasbag's response was that he didn't want to bring up injuries but if the Sabres had all of their players they are the better team. Look, I'm not going to say that the Maple Leafs are Stanley Cup contenders but I am tired of hearing about Sabre injuries as an excuse for where they are currently located in the standings. The Leafs lost their starting goaltender (James Reimer) for almost two months with concussion like symptoms and the following players were out for various periods of time: Mike Kommisarek, John-Michael Liles, Matthew Lombardi, Tim Connolly, Mikhail Grabovski, Colby Armstrong, Mike Brown and Tyler Bozak.
* Very stimulating sports talk yesterday afternoon as we had to hear about how the Bulldog didn't go sledding on Sunday afternoon because his youngest son forgot his boots at school after he had been told on numerous occasions to bring them home. Really???? Schopp praised his partner for instilling responsibility to his young son. And you want to know why WGR550 is a joke.
* WGR550 has brought back Blowhard Brad Riter as he has been filling in on occasion for Howard Simon. Riter was fired by GR several years ago because he couldn't make it to work on time. Riter fits in perfectly as he is a know-it-all who only concerns himself with the Sabres and Bills. Besides the fact that he is a known Red Sox fan (and their are a few at 550), why I really dislike Riter is his disdain for local sports particularly the local college basketball teams. Case in point: as some of you in WNY may recall Niagara University's men's basketball team won the MAAC Basketball tournament at the Arena in Buffalo back in 2005. It was a great night and it was certainly exciting watching the Purple Eagles advance to the NCAA for the first time in 35 years. The following night, Riter basically ridiculed the whole thing saying what difference does it make because Niagara will just get buried in the first round. Typical Buffalo B.S. and you want to know why people in this area are so cynical and negative.
* And finally, does anybody really care that Randy Moss wants to make a comeback???
Tuesday’s Thoughts
While wondering if Jordon Leopold will hit the Boston Bruins as hard as he hit Lindy Ruff, here is what's on my mind this morning:
* The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to stay hot as they defeated the Edmonton Oilers last night 6-3. The game started out badly for the Leafs when Jordan Eberle scored the first of his two goals 21 seconds into the first period after a bad giveaway by Dion Phaneuf. Phil Kessel had two goals and an assist and his linemates, Tyler Bozak and Joffrey Lupul, each scored a goal. James Reimer didn't have much of a chance on the first two Oiler goals and made some key saves throughout the game.
* With the win the Maple Leafs pushed past the Ottawa Senators into seventh place and they still have two games in hand on the slumping Senators. The team heads to Winnipeg for a game tonight at MTS Centre. The Jets are tough on home ice and they defeated the Leafs 3-2 on New Year's Eve at their very loud arena. The Leafs will need to be on their game. Reports yesterday were that Jonas Gustavsson will get the start tonight for the Leafs. The puck drop is scheduled for 8:35.
* On Saturday afternoon the NHL Network had the Boston-Pittsburgh game with the feed being that of the dynamic duo, Bob Errey and Paul Steigerwald. These guys were just as bad as they were earlier in the week during the Leafs-Penguins back-to-back games. Interestingly, I commented how bad these guys were and I received a number of responses back from Penguin fans agreeing with me!!
* The New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots to win Super Bowl 46 and become World Champions once again. Eli Manning was the game's MVP and hopefully this puts to bed the discussion of how good this guy is. Manning carried the Giants during the regular season and he has developed an ability to make big plays when his team needs them. Along with Manning, Head Coach Tom Coughlin deserves a lot of credit and should hopefully silence his critics in New York.
* The Giants win did not surprise me as I indicated in an earlier Tuesday's Thoughts that the NFC had the better teams this year. The Patriots had a fine season but just like the Green Bay Packers, their defense was terrible all year long and at the end of the day allowed the Giants to drive almost the length of the field to score a touchdown.
* The Giant victory closes out the NFL season and brought my overall record for selecting winners to 35-21 ATS (62.5%). I was 31-13 (70.4%) over the last 15 weeks, which included the playoffs and during the playoffs I was 5-1 (83.3%). Looking forward to September and hopefully for continued success in NFL prognosticating.
* Reports out of Cleveland are indicating that the Browns may have softened their stance toward Peyton Hillis. Hillis has proven that he can play against the AFC North heavyweights. The Browns would be smart to bring him back and hopefully have him with a healthy Brandon Jackson, Chris Ogbonnaya and Montario Hardesty.
* It will be interesting to see what the Browns do with the 4th pick overall in the first round. Reports out of Cleveland indicate that the Browns may be looking defense with that first pick. That will put many Browns fans over the edge. Conversely, Mel Kiper Jr. is projecting that the Browns will use that pick to take Robert Griffin III.
* NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said that the league will consider ending the Pro Bowl after this year's performance which was criticized by Packer QB Aaron Rodgers. Maybe Goodell read my post a week or so ago calling for the end of all All-Star games.
* The Yankees are reportedly in serious talks with free agent Raul Ibanez. The 40 year old outfielder would be the Yankees left-handed DH and spare outfielder. Not sure this makes any sense with aging stars like ARod and Derek Jeter who are going to need time at the DH role. I say rotate those duties between AROD, Jeter and Eduardo Nunez. The Yanks could always get a bat before the trade deadline in July.
* The sordid details of Yankee GM Brian Cashman's affairs is making for plenty of stories in the two NY dailies. Now I guess I know why the Yankees have done nothing the last two trade deadlines because the GM was too busy cheating on his wife.
* It will be interesting to see what happens Wednesday night when the Buffalo Sabres host the Boston Bruins. I wonder if Paul Gaustad will be trash talking like he was against the smallish Montreal Canadiens.
* And finally, what are the odds that the geniuses at WGR550 will spend anytime talking about the upcoming NCAA Basketball Tournament. It's probably a bigger long shot than Gaustad picking a fight with Milan Lucic.
Tuesday’s Thoughts
While wondering if along with reportedly being the father of Khloe Kardashian if OJ Simpson could be the father of Lindsay Lohan, here's what is on my mind this morning:
*The Toronto Maple Leafs played a strong game defensively and came away with a 3-0 win over the New York Islanders last night at the Air Canada Centre. Jonas Gustavsson posted the shut out for the Leafs and had to be solid in goal in the third period as the Leafs seemed to be back on its heels before Phil Kessel scored the Leafs second goal. Kessel's goal happened because he drove toward the net and was able to tip in the rebound off of a shot by Joffrey Lupul. It appears that Ron Wilson's message sunk in. Hopefully, the Leafs don't have amnesia tonight at the venerable Nassau Veterans Coliseum.
* Matthew Lombardi scored the other two Leaf goals last night and the Leaf forward seems to be rounding his game back into shape after missing almost all of last season due to a concussion. The acquisition of Lombardi and Cody Franson for Brett Lebda and Robert Slaney may be the steal of the century. This coupled with the acquisition of Lupul and Jake Gardiner from the Ducks should silence those members of Leaf Nation who want to criticize Brian Burke. I'll be the first to get on the Leaf GM when it is warranted but the bottom line is that Burke has done an excellent job in acquiring talent and building up the farm system.
* Nikolai Kulemin did not get an assist on Lombardi's second goal but his hit on John Tavares in the Leaf zone is what started the Leafs offensive rush. The hit had Tavares doubled over as he headed to the Islander bench.
* Not sure I can remember two better NFL conference championship games than the ones that we saw this past Sunday. The Patriots were very fortunate as the Ravens had the opportunity to win the game when Lee Evans had a catch stripped from him by Pats defensive back Sterling Moore. Then, Billy Cundiff missed a chip shot field goal that would have sent the game to overtime. Meanwhile, in San Francisco we witnessed an old fashion defensive battle as it seemed that both defenses got better as the game went on. The Patriots-Giants Super Bowl should be a good one and I think the Giants are the more complete team right now.
* Jim Harbaugh's boorish behavior at the end of the game with Tom Coughlin was disrespectful at best. You could tell that the older more experienced Coughlin wanted to say something to the young coach as they approached to shake hands but Harbaugh immediately turned away. It was classless to say the least.
* I don't want to hear anyone question Eli Manning's ability or toughness again. Manning took a pounding Sunday and it was incredible watching him complete passes while getting buried. The kid is a gamer and he is an elite quarterback.
* The idiots who have made death threats against 49er wide receiver and kick returner Kyle Williams should get a life. I have suffered many a miserable defeat (Think Earnest Byner's fumble in 1988 AFC Championship Game) but would never wish death on anybody. It's a sad commentary on today's society and explains why fans get beaten to a pulp at games because they have the temerity to root for the visiting team. I give Williams credit for being a stand up guy by not ducking any questions from reporters after the game. He showed more class than his head coach who refused to be interviewed by Fox after the game.
* There was a great article in yesterday's NY Post by Steve Serby pertaining to Ray Lewis. During the CBS pregame show, Shannon Sharpe interviewed Ray Lewis. After the interview, it was proclaimed that Lewis has been the face of the NFL for years. Really??? Serby points out that not once in the interview was the still-unsolved double homicide brought up that Lewis was found guilty of obstruction of justice and where he paid a settlement to the 2 victims families. Here is the article:

* Isn't interesting how the talking heads like to throw subtle shots at Tim Tebow for his outward demonstrations pertaining to his religious beliefs yet they glorify Ray Lewis. Let me ask you this question, who would you want your daughter going out with: Ray Lewis or Tim Tebow.
* Joe Paterno passed away Sunday morning. It is really unfortunate that a man who dedicated his life to Penn State University and to helping young people had his legacy tarnished by the horrible child sex abuse scandal. As Joe Paterno said himself, he wished he would have done more. But I for one am not going to condemn Joe Pa. It seems like there is misplaced anger being directed toward Paterno when it was Sandusky who was abusing young boys. The testimony from his former players and even from former PSU students indicate that this man had a positive impact in a lot of people's lives. Penn State will never be the same. See the article below wriiten by Pat Forde.

* The Yankees are supposedly shopping around to acquire another bat to fill the DH role at the very least on a part-time basis. Yankee GM Brian Cashman has indicated that he could sign a free agent but wants to see if can utilize the excess pitching the Yankees have to acquire a hitter. Supposedly, AJ Burnett is on the block but I can't see anyone biting. The more appealing trade chip is Phil Hughes. I think the Yanks should start the season with a DH platoon that would feature Eduardo Nunez, ARod and Derek Jeter. You can never have enough pitching. However, if they can find a sucker to take Burnett I would do it in a heartbeat.
* Well, I have Friday circled on my calendar as the great sports radio giant WGR 550 will hold an Animal Draft. Really???? These guys are a total joke. There is so much to talk about in the world of sports with the Super Bowl on the horizon, of course the Sabres and college basketball. What might be novel for the blowhards at WGR 550 is if they took the time to begin a major league baseball pre season show. They could even look at it from a fantasy baseball perspective. But these guys want to be entertainers. I would rather listen to polka musice than to listen to Schopp & The Bulldog justify why they picked a Tiger over a Lion.
* And finally, I could careless what Tim Thomas' political beliefs are and in fact I'll be honest and tell you that I think he's nuts. But my political beliefs mean nothing as do his. I am sick of multimillion dollar athletes thinking that they have to make a political statement, particularly when it involves what has become a tradition of championship teams going to the White House to meet the President. I really don't care who the President is, it's about the office of the President. I remember when Bush was President that players elected not to go for various reasons. It's all crap. Maybe they should end this whole tradition and maybe these multimillion dollar athletes should do something to encourage people to vote.
Tuesday’s Thoughts
While wondering who was the genius at CBS Sports who thought it was a good idea to have Ndamukong Suh on the NFL Today, here is what's on my mind this morning:
* The Maple Leafs begin a critical four game stretch at home tonight against the surging Ottawa Senators. The Leafs find themselves this morning in ninth place, one point behind both the Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Senators are in fifth place, seven points ahead of the Leafs but the Leafs do have three games in hand on their provincial rivals. Tonight marks the return of James Reimer in goal for the Leafs. This is a tremendous opportunity for Reimer to re-establish himself as the team's number one goalie.
* The Leafs will also have Tyler Bozak and Jake Gardiner back in the lineup. Bozak will center Phil Kessel and Joffrey Lupul and it is hoped that he will be able to get the high scoring pair back on track. I was happy to see that Gardiner is back in the lineup. Coach Ron Wilson has acknowledged that they need Gardiner's speed and ability to move the puck out of their own end to get their speed game going offensively. Gardiner will also be a much needed boost to a power play that stumbled over the weekend and hopefully will put an end to Tim Connolly or Clarke MacArthur being on the point with Dion Phaneuf.
* Bucky Gleason had a nice article Sunday about Brian Burke's rebuilding of the Maple Leafs. I have believed from the beginning that Burke was the right man for the job. He had received plenty of criticism from the Toronto media when he traded for Phil Kessel. But Burke had a plan and is not afraid of acknowledging a mistake (Beauchemin, Versteeg & Lebda and turned them into Gardiner, Lupul, Franson, Lombardi & a first round pick). I fully expect that Burkie will be making another move well before the February 27th deadline.
* Speaking of moves, the New York Yankees certainly had a busy Friday the 13th with the acquistion of Micahel Pineda and the signing of Hiroki Kuroda. Now there is plenty of discussion about who will be the DH. A point to consider is that ARod is probably going to DH at least 2 games a week depending upon his wonky hip and knee. The Yanks will also try to give Derek Jeter an occasional day as the DH. While it has been reported that the Yankees have contacted Hidecki Matsui and Johnny Damon, they could very well alternate Eduardo Nunez, Jeter and AROD between DH, third base and shortstop. Remember it was Nunez, not Jesus Montero, who Brian Cashman refused to part with in 2010 in order to get Cliff Lee from Seattle. The Yankees want to get Nunez more at bats and this would seem to be a way to do it.
* This year's Super Bowl has the makings for some interesting story lines regardless of which two teams get in. If San Francisco gets in and faces Baltimore, you will have the Harbaugh brothers coaching against each other in the Big Game. If San Francisco meets New England, you will have the Niners tough defense going up against the Patriots high-powered offense. If New York gets in, you will have a rematch of two recent Super Bowls: the Giants loss at the hands of the Ravens or the Giants upset win against the then undefeated Patriots. It's the first time since that Giant-Patriot Super Bowl that I'm actually going to look forward to the Big Game.
* I watched the last quarter of the Knicks-Magic game yesterday and it was a terrible performance by the Knicks down the stretch. Carmelo Anthony had a chance to draw the Knicks close and fired up an air ball. Can't see how New York can be considered a legitimate contender for the NBA title.
* Since the boring BCS Championship Game, there has been plenty of talk about the need for a playoff system. Apparently, the NCAA high muckity-mucks and the major conference presidents are going to be discussing the possibilities. The TV ratings indicate that this was the lowest rated BCS Game in history and this year's Orange Bowl was the lowest rated one in history. The sporting public has had it with this charade known as the BCS. If there was a semi-final featuring LSU vs Stanford and Alabama vs Oklahoma State, the ratings would have been through the roof. This can be done using the existing bowls. Let's see what happens but I'm not going to hold my breath.
* Kudos to Jerry Sullivan on his column yesterday taking the Sabres to task and specifically team owner Terry Pegula. Pegula's claim that injuries are the problem for the team's recent troubles contributes to the lack of accountability. Sullivan hit the nail on the head that the core of this team is under performing and that Darcy Reiger and Lindy Ruff are unable to turn things around.
* Interesting how WGR550's Jeremy White is raising the white flag on the 2011-12 season. He just tweeted that enough about this season and all moves should be made for next year. Really??? Last week, I got into with White on twitter after Paul "Gasbag" Hamilton tweeted that the Sabres could acquire Getzlaf and that he could be in the lineup for last Tuesday's game vs Toronto. The funny thing was that when I went out to get my Buffalo News, there was an article where Pegula said there was not going to be any major shake-up and that injuries were the problem. When I pointed out that Pegula said that there would be no trades, White went at me saying not to twist things. I went back at him reminding him that Hamilton said that a Getzlaf deal was imminent and that he could be in the lineup vs the Leafs. White is a joke. He is such a homer it's not even funny anymore.
* Once again yesterday morning, Sullivan had White all in a tizzy to the point where you could hear White whining to Howard Simon.
* I wonder if Ryan Miller wishes he was left behind in Detroit.
* Finally, can someone please check to see if Jeremy White is on the Pegula payroll???
