Bruins Champs, Yanks Win & MLB Realignment
Last night the Boston Bruins, led by Conn Smythe Trophy winner Tim Thomas, defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-0 to capture the Stanley Cup. The Bruins finally broke through on Roberto Luongo in Vancouver as Patrice Bergeron led the way offensively with 2 goals. The Canucks vaunted offense and power play shot blanks throughout the series and in fact allowed a back breaking shorthanded goal last night which pretty much sealed the deal before the end of the second period as the Bruins went up 3-0.
Going into this series, I believed that the Canucks had the better team. I will admit I don't follow the Western Conference teams that much, particularly the ones on the West Coast so I didn't really have any feelings about the Canucks. The Bruins, on the other hand, I have plenty of feelings about and most of them are not good. However, as this series rolled along beginning with the Alex Burrows bite and ending with Roberto Luongo's foolish comments about Tim Thomas, it found me actually wanting the Bruins to win. I can't believe it to be honest with you but its hard to look favorably on a team that whines, dives and seems like they have their share of cheap shots. Quite frankly, they deserved to lose. Well, a Canadian based team once again lost out on the Cup. Canada will have to wait until the Maple Leafs bring it home!!
By the way, I cannot believe the ridiculous rioting that took place in the city of Vancouver in response to the Canuck loss. What a joke!!!

The Yankees continue to roll on with a convincing 12-4 win over the Texas Rangers. The Yankee bats continue to pound away with Mark Texiera leading the way. Initial reviews are good for Eduardo Nunez as he is 4 for 8 since replacing Derek Jeter, including a home run last night.
Today Brian Gordon will take the mound for the Yankees, the replacement for Bartolo Colon. Can Gordon be this year's Aaron Small??? I guess we will find out.

There has been some confusion on the proposed Major League Baseball realignment. The proposal does not include a team to play an equal number of games between the leagues. In other words, the Yankees would not play the same number of games against the Red Sox as they would against the Mets. The balanced schedule would be amongst the AL teams, so the Yankees would play the Red Sox the same amount of times as they would against the A's. That is not the case now and actually penalizes the teams in the AL East. In fact, the realignment will make it hard to continue interleague play as it currently exists. You may see actually less interleague games which would be fine by me. That's one reason why I think the proposal merits serious consideration.

Over the weekend I may have limited posts as I'm heading to Wrigley Field to watch the Yanks and the Cubs. Wrigley Field is my favorite place to watch a game and it should be great. Still smarting over the fact that if Jeter was playing I may have seen the 3,000th hit. Anyhow, I will try to post and if not check out Twitter. I will definitely be back for Tuesday's Thoughts.
Life Without The Captain
Last night was a preview of what life will be like for the New York Yankees without their Captain, Derek Jeter. Jeter was placed on the 15-day disabled list forcing the Yankees to start Eduardo Nunez. Nunez went 2 for 4 with an RBI in a 12-4 rout of the Texas Rangers. While it will be a long while before Jeter is replaced in Yankee history, this is an opportunity for the Yankees to see what they have in Nunez as a possible replacement. Nunez will never be a Jeter, but the Yankees don't necessarily need him to be. They need him to be a good defensive shortstop, a 270-280 hitter and someone who can stabilize the most important position in the field. It also gives the Yanks the opportunity to showcase him for a possible trade to bring in a quality starting pitcher. This will be an interesting 2 weeks to see what the kid has got. It's tough to replace a legend but that's not really what the Yankees need right now.

Encouraging news out of Tampa pertaining to Phil Hughes and his attempt to recover from a mysterious ailment that sapped him from his fastball. Hughes pitched 3 scoreless innings in an intrasquad game striking out 6 while walking only one. If he feels no pain after this stint, he will pitch for the Staten Island Yanks. What a boost it would be if Hughes can come back to where he was last year.

Tomorrow, more on baseball realignment, Game 7 of the Stanley Cup & the Yankees.
Tuesday’s Thoughts
While getting ready to go to work and thinking about my personal problems while Lebron thinks about the fact that he blew it again, here's what I'm thinking about:
* How much more can the Yankees endure?? Derek Jeter pulled up lame last night and it was determined that he has a Grade 1 calf strain. Not sure what that means but there is a possibility that he could be out for awhile. Here's hoping he's back soon.
* Well, it looks like we will get a look at Eduardo Nunez at shortstop for at least a few games. Remember this was a guy that Brian Cashman would not part with in order to get Cliff Lee from Seattle.
* More bad Pinstripe news: Russell Martin could be facing a stint on the DL. Martin was not in the lineup last night as his back was giving him problems again. If Martin is out for an extended period of time, how about bringing up Jesus Montero.
* This season is eerily reminding me of the Red Sox season last year. Plenty of injuries and no playoffs. However, the only advantage the Yankees may have is that Tampa Bay is not as good as last year and I'm not sure there is another team in the league that could challenge for the wild card spot. However, it's only the middle of June.
* The Stanley Cup finals continued home ice advantage with the Boston Bruins forcing a Game 7 by defeating the Vancouver Canucks 5-2. For the second time in this series in Boston, Roberto Luongo was pulled from the game. Maybe next time Luongo should keep his mouth shut.
* Not sure what to expect in Game 7. The games in Vancouver have been one goal affairs with the Canucks coming out on top. Hard to predict but somehow I'm thinking the Canucks will end up winning.
* Lebron James is the gift that keeps on giving. His ridiculous comments Sunday night after the Heat's bitter loss shows that this guy is an immature, self-centered jerk. Somehow when its all said and done I think D-Wade may regret the day that he recruited the self-proclaimed king.
* As the Mavs were running the clock down to a championship, I could only think about how this was reminding me how satisfied I was on the night that Joe Frazier defeated Muhammed Ali back in the early 70's. Of course, they would face each other two more times with Ali coming out on top but only after enduring a beating both times.
* Who would you rather have in their prime: Shaq or Lebron??
* With the Finals over, the NBA could be headed for a lockout. It wouldn't surprise me because many franchises are struggling and the debacle that was created by Pat Riley & Company in Miami last summer needs to be addressed. Otherwise, the league should contract down to 10 mega teams.
* The Knicks should learn a lesson from the Mavs victory, you don't need any more stars.
* There are reports that there could be a deal in the NFL lockout on or about July 4th. You know what, I could care less.
* And finally, is it me or does it seem that there are a lot of mediocre teams this year in Major League Baseball???
Justice Has Been Served: Mavs Are NBA Champs!!
Last night was a win for team play. It was a win for the lunch pail crew. It was a win for the people who put their head down and work every day. It was a win for the unselfish. Nearly a year after the Miami Heat staged the big coming out party for their recently signed free agents Chris Bosh and Lebron James, the big party belonged to the Dallas Mavericks as they took it to the Dream Team on their home floor to become NBA Champions.
As I have stated before, I'm not a big NBA fan but last night was a game I had to watch. Incredibly, despite a cold shooting first half for Dirk Nowitzki, the Mavs led by 2 at half thanks to the incredible shooting of Jason Terry. How can you not like Terry. Coming off the bench, he picked his team up while their star was trying to find his way.
Nowizski, who couldn't buy a basket in the first half, rose to the occasion in the second half knocking down some key baskets at the end including a couple of 3s. What can you say about Jason Kidd. He may not have scored much but he provided leadership and tough D throughout the game and hit a couple of big shots in the 4th quarter, including an incredible 3 point shot with the 24 second clock winding down. It was nice to see this 17 year veteran get his first title. And how about little Jose Barea? Awesome game making some big shots for his team.
The Mavs were the better team at the free throw line. The Heat had almost twice the chances at the charity stripe and were terrible. The Dream Team made more turnovers than a baker while the Mavs protected the ball well. Rebounding is all about positioning and desire. Well, the Mavs had it and the Heat didn't. Several times late in the 4th quarter, the Mavs got critical offensive rebounds which allowed them to continue to work the clock and get second scoring chances.
I thought it was great that in the second half, with the Mavs beginning to pull away, ABC showed the big coming out party with the Big 3 preening and posing for the cameras. Could you imagine any other sports franchise doing that for their first presser after signing some big free agents?? The arrogance and immaturity of James and D-Wade was further on display a couple of days ago when they were caught mocking Nowitzski, who was suffering from a severe sinus infection but still played despite a 101 fever. Of course, the dynamic duo tried spinning their way out of it but it was as hollow as their play last night in the second half.
In the end, the Mavericks are champs because they were the better team. Not one of the Big 3 were able to put their team on their backs to bring their team back in the 4th quarter. They choked as evidenced by Wade dribbling the ball off his foot and James being in hiding for most of the second half. Speaking of James, this guy really needs to grow up and learn that sometimes you have to eat crow and be humble. But no not King James. After choking big time, he blasted his critics by saying that people who are happy that the Heat lost will have to get up this morning and go to work and deal with their personal problems while he is going to live his life the way he wants. Who gives a damn what you say Lebron. A champion knows how to win with humility and lose gracefully. You haven't learned that lesson because you've been pampered and catered to all your basketball life. We may have to go to work and deal with our personal problems this morning, but Lebron you have to wake up this morning knowing that you are choke artist and a loser. JUSTICE HAS BEEN SERVED!!!
Yankee Troubles Mount & New MLB Alignment
The Good Ship Pinstripe took another hit yesterday afternoon when Bartolo Colon limped off the field at the end of the top of the 7th with what appears as a hamstring injury that will probably have him on the disabled list. Colon has been the Yankees second best starting pitcher this year. The battered rotation is now left with Sabathia, the young Ivan Nova, the incredibly inconsistent AJ Burnett and the up and down, soft tossing Freddy Garcia. Hardly a rotation that can win a playoff series, let alone one that can win a division.
There is no deal that's going to be made at this point so the Yankees will have to go to the minors and bring up someone to fill Colon's spot. What compounds the problem is that the Yankee bullpen is a mess. They cannot rely on getting just 5 innings out of the starter and turning it over to the bullpen. The pressure will really be on the positional players. They are going to have to avoid prolonged hitting slumps, run smartly on the base paths and provide steady defensive play.
I guess we will find out a lot about this team now. Past teams have been able to dig down deep and weather the storm. They are going to need an Aaron Small like performance from someone. If they don't get one, turn out the lights the party's over.

ESPN is reporting that MLB and the Players Union is talking about a new realignment that would create two 15 team leagues and 5 teams from each league making the playoffs. It's an interesting idea and would certainly give hope to teams like Toronto or anyone else not named the Yankees or Red Sox. It would eliminate the current ridiculous unbalanced schedule. A stumbling block could be how they deal with interleague play. This shouldn't be insurmountable in my opinion. I think it's something worth exploring. Baseball needs some new energy and this could be just what it needs.
Pinstripe Ship Sinking
The season series is 1-8. 0-6 at Yankee Stadium. Those are the numbers that tell the story of the 2011 Yankee-Red Sox saga with the Beantowners smugly leaving the Bronx with a 2 game lead over their rival. While being two games out of first on June 10th isn't that big of a deal, the current state of the New York Yankees is a very big deal. Simply put: unless some type of changes occur this team is going nowhere.
With the news that Joba Chamberlain is done for the year, the Yankee bullpen is a joke. Unless someone can be called up from the farm and catch lightning in a bottle, similar to what Joba did in his Yankee debut, a deal will have to be made and dealing from a position of weakness is never a good thing.
What compounds the bullpen issues is the starting rotation. But for CC Sabathia (in spite of last night) the Yankee rotation is a joke when you consider that their number 2 is Bartolo Colon. AJ Burnett is in a long line of free agent pitchers the Yankees have spent gobs of money on only to get burned badly. I never was a big AJ Burnett fan going back to his days with the Blue Jays. Quite frankly, I think he's a head case. As Mike Francesca said yesterday," they spent $82.5 million for a guy to throw pies". Great line, Mike.
Freddy Garcia has looked awful, particularly against good hitting teams and Ivan Nova doesn't have it. I admire Nova's toughness and his desire to be a Yankee but he doesn't appear to have it. Hopefully, its a question of needing more seasoning. But I'm not sure he can be counted on down the stretch. As far as Colon goes, not sure how long he's going to last but if he falters all your left with is Sabathia.
Bottom line is that this team's pitching staff is terrible and we know that in October it's pitching that wins. But why should I be talking about October, this team as it currently is constructed will be lucky to be playing then.
Offensively, this team has the talent to score enough runs to win games but as we know good pitching beats good hitting and the top teams have good pitching. The problem that I have is that when you are struggling you need to do the little things to get a spark going. Hit and run, bunt, steal a base. Your best base stealer can't steal bases anymore. In fact, Brett Gardner doesn't seem to be able to run the bases anymore.
In an earlier post, I advocated that the Yanks needed to bring up some kids from the farm. If it doesn't happen now it never well. That includes bringing up any of the prized pitching prospects that Brian Cashman is so proud of. But based on what I read in the NY Post, that's not going to happen.
As a Yankee fan, and I will be in the minority here, I would respect and appreciate it if Brian Cashman came out a said, " we are going to go with some youth here and see what happens." In essence, bring the kids up push some of the old guys aside and if you finish out of the playoffs so be it. We know that won't happen but Cashman is not going to make enough trades to right this ship. A ship that is sinking fast.
At the top of this blog you see that I am a Yankee, Browns and Maple Leaf fan. Of those 3 teams the Yankees have had the most success. However, right now I would take the management team of both the Browns and Leafs over Cashman and Company. The blame lies there. It lies with the Steinbrenner boys, the stooges around them and Cashman. This team so eerily reminds me of those 80's teams that had the big names but never won a thing.
Yankee management knew that the day was coming for the Core 4 to no longer perform at a level that we were accustomed to. They have not been able to replace Andy Pettitte. They did not have the courage to bring up one of their supposed catching prospects to begin the process of replacing Jorge Posada. If Eduardo Nunez is the replacement for Derek Jeter, somehow I don't see it right now but quite frankly the kid needs to play more. And what is going to happen when Mariano calls it quits??? Rafael Soriano?? Please!!!!
The Yankees will not allow the kids to play because they need to present the illusion that they are in the hunt for a championship when in reality they are nowhere near one, not with a pitching staff that they have right now. With the Indians coming to town for the weekend, you are going to see youth versus age. Should be interesting.
Great Night For Boston
Last night Boston's baseball and hockey teams scored impressive victories to give their followers plenty to crow about this morning. The Red Sox continued their domination of the Yankees with an 11-6 win at Yankee Stadium marking the first time since 1913 that the Red Sox have won the first 5 games played in New York between the two teams.
AJ Burnett was brutal. This from the guy who is being paid $82 million over 5 years and is the designated #2 of the starting rotation. Once again the Yankees found themselves down after the top of the first, a deficit they never could recover from. Once again the Yankees played uninspired baseball. Some Yankees talked about this is how things started in 2009 and we know how that ended. But their kidding themselves if they are trying to compare this edition of the Yankees with the 2009 World Champion Yankees.
2 quick points: What the hell was Brett Gardner doing on third base in the 6th inning??? I think even a little leaguer would have known enough to come home on a passed ball that went all the way to the backstop. Girardi characterized it as a "misread". I characterize it as being a bonehead. If I was manager Gardner would find himself on the bench today.
Second point: So much for the babying of the Yankee Young Guns. With Phil Hughes on the DL, we now find out that Joba Chamberlain joins him. Apparently, Joba has been complaining of tenderness in the elbow but has pitched through it. Now the Yankee bullpen is made up of Rivera, Robertson and a bunch of no-names. By the way, Boone Logan is terrible.

The Bruins dominated the Canucks once again last night and clearly have the momentum heading back to Vancouver for Game 5. The Canucks looked intimidated and could generate nothing on its power play. With a little luck, the Bruins could be up 3-1 or could have swept this series losing by one goal in both games earlier played in Vancouver. Game 5 will be interesting to see if the Canucks can regain their swagger and their scoring touch. Tim Thomas seems to be in a groove and the Canucks are going to have to find a way to beat him. If they don't Beantowners will be witnessing a championship. And with the way things are going in baseball, 2011 may be a banner year for Boston.
Red Sox Roll, Mavs Win & Pryor Leaves
0-4....That's what the New York Yankees are against their blood rivals the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. It's not only that fact, its the way they have been bullied in their own playground. There is much to focus on. Freddy Garcia was terrible. 3-0 after the 1st inning put the Yanks in a hole they never got out of. It gives you pause, if you are a Yankee fan, if what you saw last night from Garcia is what you would see if the Yanks are playing in October. It also puts the spotlight on the fragile status of their rotation.
The bottom of the first illustrated a familiar site: Mark Texiera gets hit on the knee, putting him out of the game, and possibly out of this series. Thankfully, there was no break. But how many times have we seen Yankee hitters getting plunked by Red Sox pitchers. Do you remember the game several years ago when ARod and Jeter were nailed in the same game??? Was there any pay back last night??? Absolutely not and I for one am tired of it. Anyone of the Red Sox 3-4-5 hitter should have been plunked. It needed to happen last night but it didn't.
This lack of fire and team pride gets me hotter than a firecracker. What happened to the Yankee intensity as exhibited by the playoff game that saw Don Zimmer go after Pedro?? What happened to the intensity that saw Graig Nettles go at it with Bill Lee?? The Yankee players of the past had the same intensity for this series as their fans. Now, it seems like its beneath them to get down and dirty. Case in point, in an interview after the game, ARod was asked his reaction to David Ortiz's theatrical bat flip after he homered off rookie Hector Noesi. "We have a lot of respect for those guys over there," he said not directly answering the question. Respect?? These guys are taking it to you in your own backyard and your talking respect??? How about we gotta put an end to this!!!! Somehow it is hard to imagine Thurman Munson or Lou Pinella talking about respect after the Red Sox took out one of their top hitters and beat them once again at Yankee Stadium.
With respect to the bat flip by Ortiz, if that was ARod who did that off some rookie pitcher that put the Yankees ahead 6-1 you would have heard all kinds of howling as to what a jerk he is. But, Ortiz basically said go stuff it when he was told that Joe Girardi took exception to it. That says it all to me. Red Sox players have the same intensity as their fans. They don't give a damn about the Yankees, Yankee Stadium or anything else. Since 2004, they have the swagger the Yankees once had. As Yankee fans we have to endure the grab-ass feel good crap while the Red Sox roll along. This is why I try not to get too worked up about these early games. But this is a big series and if the Yankees don't see that well then all I can say is: if they don't care why the hell should I care!!!

Watched the last quarter and a half of the NBA Game 4 Finals last night. It was a very exciting game and I was very happy that the Mavs came back and held on to defeat Miami to even up the series at 2. Dirk Nowitzki played heroically with a 102 fever and Tyson Chandler had a big rebound at the end which kept possession for Dallas late in the game. We have a series now and hopefully the Mavericks can pull this one out.

It was announced yesterday that Terrell Pryor is leaving Ohio State. The move is interesting since it would appear that Pryor will now not play football all year heading into next year's NFL Draft (if there is one). Not sure where Pryor would fall in the draft. Some believe he is of the Vince Young mold, more a runner than passer. I felt that Pryor had showed glimpses of being a decent pro quarterback. But not playing football for a season could impact his draft status.
What also could impact his draft status are character issues which had resulted in him being suspended for 5 games this year if he had stayed in school, along with plenty of other information that came out as a result of the OSU investigation. It's interesting that the two key players in the investigation, Tressel and Pryor, have now left Ohio State. I'm sure that the administration believes that this will bode well for the athletic department when the NCAA comes out with its findings.
Pryor was the new fall guy after Tressel resigned. It will be interesting if the Buckeyes find a new fall guy. The problem for them the most logical fall guys should be the athletic director and the school president. Somehow I don't think that those two will point the finger at each other. What a joke!!
Tuesday’s Thoughts
While wondering when we will be spared of the stupidity of Sarah Palin, here's what I'm thinking about this morning:
* Last night's Cup Final game had a real ugly tint to it. Aaron Rome's hit on Nathan Horton was flat out terrible. It was totally uncalled for and nothing but a cheap shot. Based upon the shellacking the Bruins gave the Canucks this hit could be the turning point of the series.
* Don't know if I have seen a bigger actor than Alex Burrows. Last night he gets into a scrum behind the Bruins net and he goes down like he was shot. The guy may be a good hockey player but he's a disgrace. Should have been suspended after Game 1.
* The Vancouver power play came up big against the San Jose Sharks but has gone into a 1-17 slump against the Bruins. Prior to the Sharks series, their power play was abysmal. If they are to win the Cup, they will need to get it going.
* Funny on the day that I went after the 4 Commissioners, a story came out that the NHL was in hot water by giving the exclusive beer rights of the league to Molson/Coors while Labatt's still had the rights. I think Boy Gary is an attorney. Maybe he needs to go back to law school for a Contracts course.
* If the Mavericks don't win tonight the series will be over in 5 games and the continued deification of Lebron James will be in full force. James is a great athlete and basketball player but his act last year gets him a permanent spot on my black balled list. Other members of that list include Ray Lewis and Brett Farve to name a few.
* Plaxico Burress was released from jail yesterday having served his jail sentence. It will be interesting to see which team takes a flyer on him. Reports are it won't be the Giants.
* Carlos Zambrano went off on his team calling the Cubs a "Triple-A" team. He apologized the next day but Big Z does get you to think: why can't the Cubs be perennial contenders??? Must be that Billy Goat Curse.
* Tonight begins the renewal of the Blood Rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox. The Yankees need to show up and avenge the embarassing 3-0 sweep that they suffered at the hands of the Sox at the Stadium in May. One thing is for sure, the Yanks need to play smart baseball. No dumb baserunning mistakes and errors. It seems that lately when they've played the Sox they seem to give leads up right away because of some bone-head play or a couple of walks that start a rally.
* Tonight's game is being carried on MY9 so get ready for watching the game as looking through a telescope. Terrible picture quality and having to put up with Michael Kay melodrama will be enough to send me to the radio.
* And finally, it's being reported that the NFL is developing a contingency schedule which will result in an 8 game season starting in November. Are you kidding me?????? One more reason for my disgust with the arrogance of the NFL. Does this mean season ticket holders will get refunds??? Stay tuned.
Knicks Debacle, Cup Finals, CC To The Rescue
After becoming relevant again in NYC, the Knicks have begun to implode with the announcement that Donnie Walsh will no longer serve as President and GM of the basketball team. It's interesting reading the different takes on this. Most of the writers in the dailies are really giving it to James Dolan. Their belief is that Dolan forced Walsh out because Donnie wanted more control. Walsh recommended two guys to take over as GM: Mark Jackson and Chris Mullin. Dolan said no.
The other take is that Dolan wanted Walsh to agree to a two year deal and at a reduced salary. Walsh turned it down more over the length of the deal. Whichever reason you want to believe if your a Knick fan you have to be leary of what's up next. For all Knick fans, here's hoping that Isiah Thomas is no where to be found. If he comes back, it's over for the resurgence at the " world's most famous arena."
**************************************************************************************
In another nail-biter, the Vancouver Canucks have taken a 2-0 series lead with 3-2 overtime win over the Boston Bruins. The Bruins had a 2-1 lead going into the third period and it looked like they might even the series. However, it was not to be and instead of possibly leaving Vancouver 1-1 or up 2-0, they head home down and in a must win situation at the TD Garden on Monday.
Boston has been in this situation before against the Canadiens. Actually it was worse because they lost the first two games at home. I think this series will go at least 6 games but for the Bruins to have a chance they will need to get their power play going and they will need to tighten up, particularly in the later stages of the game. Game 3 is always the pivotal contest. Can't wait for Monday night.
*************************************************************************************
CC Sabathia does it again. Proving once again why he is an ace and why the Yankees must make sure he doesn't exercise his option to bail out next season. Going 8 2/3 innings, Sabathia was on his game and provided the type of game that was needed to ensure that the Yanks will end the road trip with a winning record.
ARod came up with a big tw0-run homer that provided the winning runs. It would be nice for Bartolo Colon to give the same type of effort today with the Angels starting Joel Piniero. Going home with a 6-3 road trip under their belts would certainly set the stage for their series against the Red Sox at the Stadium starting Tuesday. They owe the Bosox big time as they are down 5-1 in the season series against their blood rivals.

Tomorrow more Ohio State stuff and other tidbits heading into the Red Sox-Yankees series.
